Introducing Taï Phong: A French Prog Rock Gem

Released in June 1975, "Taï Phong" is the debut album from the French symphonic progressive rock band of the same name. The band, formed by Vietnamese-French brothers Khanh Maï and Taï Sinh, features a lineup that includes the talented Jean-Jacques Goldman on lead vocals and guitars, who would later achieve immense success as a pop singer-songwriter in France. Rounding out the group are Jean-Alain Gardet on keyboards and Moog synthesizers, Stéphan Caussarieu on drums, and Taï Sinh contributing bass and guitar.

Musical Composition and Style

This self-titled album is a blend of melodic symphonic rock with strong Anglo influences. The sound is characterized by dual lead guitars that soar above lush Moog and Mellotron layers. High-register vocal harmonies are prominent, and classical violin passages create a rich texture throughout the tracks. The band draws comparisons to well-known acts like Yes, Camel, and Pink Floyd, thanks to its intricate arrangements and ambitious compositions.

One of the standout tracks from the album is "Sister Jane," an acoustic ballad that became a massive hit across Europe. Sung in English by Goldman, it sold over 200,000 copies in France alone. The album's other tracks include "Goin' Away," "Crest," "For Years And Years (Cathy)," "Fields Of Gold," and the 11-minute epic "Out Of The Night."

Recording and Production

The album was produced by Jean Mareska and recorded at Studio I.P. in Boulogne and Studio Gang in Paris. The engineering team included sound engineers Georges Blumenfeld and Jean-Pierre Pouret, with mixing handled by Andy Scott, Philippe Beaucamp, and Khanh Maï. The album's photography was done by Claude Gassian, adding a visual element to the band's artistic vision.

With its rich instrumentation and thoughtful songwriting, "Taï Phong" offers a solid introduction to the band's sound and sets the stage for their future endeavors in the progressive rock scene. The album was released under the Warner Bros. Records label with the catalog number 56 124.
