Three Of A Perfect Pair
"Three Of A Perfect Pair" is the tenth studio album by King Crimson, released in March 1984. It was produced by the band and released under EG Records and Warner Bros. The album was recorded from spring 1983 to early 1984 at Bearsville Studios in New York and Marcus Studios in London. This release marks the culmination of the band's celebrated 1980s trilogy, following "Discipline" and "Beat."
The album is conceptually divided into two distinct halves. The "Left Side" features accessible, song-oriented math-pop and danceable new-wave music. Tracks such as "Three Of A Perfect Pair," "Model Man," and the single "Sleepless" highlight this engaging sound. "Sleepless," mixed by Bob Clearmountain, showcases Tony Levin's slap-bass technique. Other tracks on this side include "Man With An Open Heart" and the ambient piece "Nuages."
The "Right Side" takes a darker turn, presenting experimental and industrial elements. This half includes the industrial suite "Industry," the fragmented approach of "Dig Me," and the improvisational "No Warning." The side concludes with "Larks' Tongues In Aspic Part III," which emphasizes polyrhythmic dissonance and intensity.
The cover art for "Three Of A Perfect Pair" features a striking yellow-and-blue design, created by Peter Willis and illustrated by Timothy Eames. This artwork represents a balance of masculine and feminine principles, which aligns with the album's thematic exploration.
The lineup for this album includes Robert Fripp on electric guitar, Adrian Belew on lead vocals and guitars, Tony Levin on Chapman Stick and bass, and Bill Bruford on drums and percussion. Each member contributes to the unique sound and complexity of the album.
Following the release of "Three Of A Perfect Pair," King Crimson embarked on a world tour. The band disbanded shortly after, entering a hiatus that lasted for a decade. This period ended with the release of "THRAK" in 1994.
The album was released under catalog number EGLP 55 by EG Records.
