Magick Brother
"Magick Brother," the debut album by the band Gong, was released by BYG Records in late 1969. This album combines elements of space rock, psychedelic rock, and free jazz. It reflects the experimental spirit of the late 1960s, emerging from the artistic milieu of Paris and the aftermath of the May 1968 student protests.
The album's creation was influenced by the experiences of Daevid Allen and Gilli Smyth, both of whom were deeply affected by the sociopolitical climate. Following the uprisings, they retreated to Deià, Mallorca, where they encountered Didier Malherbe, a talented flautist and saxophonist living in a cave. This serendipitous meeting played a crucial role in forming the band's unique sound.
"Magick Brother" was recorded between September and October 1969 at Studio Éta and Studio Europa Sonor in Paris. Producers Jean Georgakarakos and Jean-Luc Young were instrumental in crafting the album's sound. The album features contributions from several guest musicians, including avant-garde jazz artists like Barre Phillips and Burton Greene. Their involvement added layers of complexity to the music, blending whimsical melodies with improvisational jazz elements.
The album is divided into two thematic sides. The "Early Morning Side" includes tracks like "Mystic Sister - Magick Brother" and "Glad To Sad To Say," showcasing a mix of acoustic space-rock and vibrant pop sensibilities. The "Side Of The Late Night" features songs such as "Ego" and "Princess Dreaming," which further explore the band's signature fusion of styles. Gilli Smyth's "Space Whisper" technique stands out, adding a distinctive vocal layer to the proceedings.
Daevid Allen not only performed on the album but also contributed to its visual identity through cover artwork and liner notes. This artistic approach reflects the band's commitment to a holistic creative vision. The album's gatefold format enhances the visual experience, inviting listeners into the band’s imaginative world.
