Released in 1972, "Atlantide" is the third studio album by the Italian progressive rock band The Trip. This album was launched under RCA Italiana and is recognized for its deep conceptual narrative. It delves into the rise, corruption, destruction, and aftermath of the mythological lost continent of Atlantis, a theme that resonates throughout its composition.

Lineup Changes and Musical Direction

Following the departures of guitarist Billy Gray and drummer Pino Sinnone, The Trip redefined its sound. The arrival of drummer Furio Chirico marked a significant shift. Chirico, noted for his technical prowess, would later establish the jazz-rock group Arti & Mestieri. This transition allowed the band to develop an ELP-inspired power trio aesthetic. The core lineup on "Atlantide" features Joe Vescovi on keyboards, Hammond organ, piano, and vocals, alongside Arvid "Wegg" Andersen on bass and vocals, and Furio Chirico on drums and percussion.

Production and Arrangement

Production took place at RCA Studios in Rome, with Enzo Martella serving as the engineer. The album's arrangements were largely crafted by Vescovi, with Andersen contributing lyrics. The album's vinyl format is complemented by a unique shaped fold-out "clam shell" sleeve designed by Studio Up & Down, enhancing its physical appeal.

Track Structure and Themes

The album features a continuous flow of music, dividing its content into two sides. Side A includes tracks such as "Atlantide," "Evoluzione," "Leader," and "Energia." Side B continues the narrative with "Ora X," "Analisi," "Distruzione," and "Il Vuoto." This structure supports the album's conceptual theme, allowing the listener to experience the journey of Atlantis in a seamless manner.

Each track is a reflection of the band's evolving sound and thematic depth, showcasing their commitment to the progressive rock genre. The combination of Vescovi's keyboards, Andersen's bass, and Chirico's dynamic drumming creates a rich auditory landscape.
