"Local Anaesthetic" is the fourth studio album by the UK progressive/art rock project Nirvana, released in 1971 under the Vertigo label (catalog number 6360 031). This album came after the departure of co-founder Alex Spyropoulos, leading to Patrick Campbell-Lyons taking full creative control of the project. The transformation from baroque pop to a more ambitious sound marked a new direction for the band.

Musical Structure and Composition

The album consists of two extensive side-long suites. The first suite, "Modus Operandi," runs for 16 minutes and 9 seconds. It features a blend of progressive rock and jazz-fusion elements. Heavy fuzz guitar riffs and a rolling Hammond organ, played by Pete Kelly, drive the piece. The track includes improvisational grooves and dynamic crescendos, showcasing a diverse range of musical ideas.

On the flip side, the suite titled "Home" is divided into five distinct movements: "Salutation," "Construction," "Destruction," "Re-Construction," and "Fanfare." This conceptual art-rock suite incorporates pastoral folk melodies and intricate acoustic guitar arrangements. It also features Mellotron and piano motifs, along with avant-garde sound collages that enhance its experimental nature.

The album is housed in a striking gatefold sleeve designed by the legendary Vertigo artist Keef, also known as Keith MacMillan. The surrealist imagery complements the album's artistic aspirations, making it visually appealing to collectors and fans alike. Recording Details

"Local Anaesthetic" was recorded at Island Studios in Basing Street, London, England, in 1971. The production was handled by Patrick Campbell-Lyons, with Roger Beale serving as the sound engineer. The contributions from additional unknown guest musicians, including bassists and drummers, further enhance the album's rich sound.
