Tonton Macoute
Tonton Macoute, a British progressive jazz-rock quartet, released their sole studio album in March 1971. This self-titled LP, cataloged as Neon NE 4, emerged from the remnants of the 1960s pop-psych band The Good Earth. It was issued on RCA's rare progressive subsidiary, Neon, which had limited releases. The album was engineered by Martin Rushent at Sound Techniques in Chelsea, London, showcasing his technical expertise. Rushent would later gain fame as a producer for bands like The Stranglers and The Human League.
The album features a blend of Canterbury-style jazz-prog elements and heavy jazz-rock influences. Lead vocals are provided by Paul French, who also plays the Hammond organ, Fender Rhodes electric piano, and vibraphone. His musical versatility adds rich textures to the overall sound. Dave Knowles contributes with alto and tenor saxophones, electric saxophone, concert flute, and clarinet. His fiery saxophone solos are a highlight of the album. The rhythm section includes Chris Gavin on bass guitar and guitars, and Nigel Reveler on drums and percussion. This lineup creates a nimble and dynamic musical environment throughout the record.
The album opens with the six-minute track "Just Like Stone," setting the stage for the eclectic sounds to follow. "Flying South In Winter," led by flute, offers a lighter contrast. The upbeat "You Make My Jelly Roll" introduces a funkier vibe. Meanwhile, the centerpiece of the album is the two-part "Natural High," which spans 11 minutes and showcases the band's progressive tendencies. Each track presents distinct arrangements and musical explorations, making for a varied listening experience.
The gatefold sleeve, designed and photographed by Keef (Keith MacMillan), features surrealist artwork that complements the album's musical content. The visual presentation is as striking as the sounds contained within. The design reflects the creative spirit of the early 1970s, drawing listeners into the world of Tonton Macoute.
Tonton Macoute's self-titled debut LP was recorded between late 1970 and early 1971.
