"Zin-Zin" is the only studio album by the British jazz-fusion ensemble Sun Treader, released in 1973 under the Island Records label (catalog HELP 13). The album features a lineup that includes Morris Pert on drums, percussion, and vibes, alongside Peter Robinson, who plays the Fender Rhodes electric piano and acoustic piano. These two musicians form the creative backbone of the album, both of whom would go on to be key figures in the British jazz-fusion scene, particularly with the band Brand X.

Recording and Musical Style

The recording took place at Marquee Studios in London in February 1973, a venue known for its rich musical history. Sun Treader's music is characterized by its extended, modal jazz-fusion compositions. The album comprises four lengthy tracks, each showcasing intricate musical explorations. The title track "Zin-Zin" runs for 13:52 minutes, while "Stardance" and "Orinoco" provide cosmic soundscapes with lengths of 9:57 and 12:50 minutes, respectively. The closing piece, "From The Region Of Capricorn," lasts for 12:17 minutes.

Morris Pert's drumming is marked by rapid polyrhythms, complementing Peter Robinson's distortion-laden Fender Rhodes lines. Guest musician Robin Thompson adds a fiery soprano saxophone on several tracks, further enriching the album's sound. The bass guitar work by Alyn Ross provides a deep funk foundation, enhancing the overall groove.

Production Details

The album was produced in a collaborative environment, with Will Ropex serving as the sound engineer. The lacquer cut for the vinyl was handled by George Peckham, known as "Porky." The production captures the raw energy and improvisational spirit of the band, evident in each of the four expansive tracks.
