Aviator
Aviator, the self-titled debut album by the British progressive rock band Aviator, was released in 1979. The album came out under Harvest Records and is cataloged as SHSP 4096. The band consists of experienced musicians who have made their mark in the rock genre. The lineup features guitarist and vocalist Mick Rogers, known for his work with Manfred Mann's Earth Band, saxophonist and Lyricon player Jack Lancaster from Blodwyn Pig, bassist and vocalist John G. Perry who has worked with Caravan and Curved Air, and Clive Bunker, the original drummer of Jethro Tull.
The album was recorded at two locations: Redan Recorders in London and Startling Studios in Ascot. The production of the album involved the band members themselves, with additional production assistance for select tracks by Robin Lumley of Brand X. The engineering work was handled by Dave Tickle and Roger T. Wake, showcasing a collaborative effort that reflects the band's dynamic.
Aviator distinguishes itself with the use of wind synthesizers, specifically the Lyricon and Computone, which replace the conventional keyboard sounds often found in progressive rock. This choice adds a unique texture to the music, aligning with the innovative spirit of the genre during that era. The album contains tracks that explore various themes and musical styles, demonstrating the diverse influences of its members.
The cover illustration for the album was designed by Alan Guy. The artwork complements the music and reflects the artistic sensibilities of the late 1970s progressive rock scene. The visual elements work in tandem with the sounds on the record, enhancing the overall experience for listeners.
While the album features multiple tracks, two standouts include "Keep Your Heart Right" and "Country Morning." These tracks benefit from the additional production efforts of Robin Lumley, further enriching the listening experience. Each song contributes to a cohesive presentation that showcases the band's musical exploration.
