The Album
The Album is the ninth studio release by the English progressive rock band Caravan. It was launched in November 1980 under Kingdom Records, catalog KVL 9003. This record marked a return for the band after a hiatus and a split from their previous label, Arista. Notably, founding keyboardist Dave Sinclair rejoined the band for this project.
The recording sessions took place in July 1980 at Farmyard Studios located in Little Chalfont, Buckinghamshire. Engineering and mixing were carried out by Stephen W. Tayler and Ian Morais. Terry King coordinated the production aspects of the album. The lineup for this album included Pye Hastings on guitars and lead vocals, Dave Sinclair on keyboards and vocals, Geoffrey Richardson handling guitars, viola, flute, and vocals, Dek Messecar on bass and vocals, and Richard Coughlan on drums.
The Album features a shift towards a more direct and melodious pop-rock sound compared to previous Caravan works. The songwriting was shared among band members, contributing to a diverse range of tracks. "Heartbreaker," "Piano Player," and "Clear Blue Sky" exemplify this new direction with their accessible melodies and arrangements. The band maintained their progressive rock roots while exploring a more mainstream appeal in this release.
This album was released in vinyl format, specifically as an LP. The choice of vinyl aligns with the band's commitment to traditional recording and listening experiences, appealing to both new fans and longtime followers of Caravan.
The album was engineered and mixed in a professional studio setting, ensuring a high-quality sound production. The collaboration between the band members and the production team aimed to capture the essence of their musical evolution during this period.
