Exploring White Noise's "An Electric Storm"

Released in 1969 by Island Records, "An Electric Storm" is the debut album of the British electronic experimental group White Noise. This project emerged from the collaboration of David Vorhaus, an American classical bassist and electronic engineer, with pioneering figures from the BBC Radiophonic Workshop, Delia Derbyshire and Brian Hodgson. Together, they operated under the collective name Kaleidophon.

Innovative Soundscapes

The album is characterized by its use of extensive tape manipulation and loops. Early synthesizers, notably the EMS VCS3, play a crucial role in shaping its sound. White Noise employed concrete sounds, creating a rich tapestry of auditory experiences. The stereo spatial effects add depth to the listening experience, making it feel immersive.

Track Highlights

Side 1 of the album presents a series of eerie electronic pop miniatures. Tracks such as "Love Without Sound" and "My Game Of Loving" exemplify this approach, blending accessible melodies with avant-garde techniques. The songs "Here Come The Fleas," "Firebird," and "Your Hidden Dreams" follow, maintaining this blend of pop sensibility and experimental sound.

In contrast, Side 2 delves into darker territories. The 11-minute piece "The Visitation" serves as a ghost story, while "The Black Mass: An Electric Storm In Hell" offers an unsettling exploration of sound. These tracks contribute to the album's experimental nature, pushing boundaries further than traditional rock music of the time.

Collaborative Efforts

White Noise features vocals from Annie Bird, John Whitman, and Val Shaw, adding a human element to the electronic fabric. Paul Lytton's free-jazz percussion complements the electronic instrumentation, creating a unique rhythm that enhances the album's experimental qualities.

White Noise's "An Electric Storm" was released on vinyl as an LP, catalog number ILPS 9099. Its innovative approach to sound and music production sets it apart from its contemporaries.
