Brainbox is the self-titled debut album by the Dutch group Brainbox, released in 1969. Band Composition and Production

The group features Kaz Lux, whose soulful vocals drive the band's sound. Jan Akkerman, known for his virtuosic guitar skills, plays a crucial role alongside his contributions on organ and vibraphone. The rhythm section includes bassist André Reijnen and jazz-rock drummer Pierre van der Linden. This combination of talent is a significant aspect of the album's character.

Production was handled by Tim Griek, with engineering by André Hooning at Bovema Studios located in Heemstede, Netherlands. The recording environment contributed to the album's quality, allowing for a clear representation of the band's musical prowess.

Musical Exploration

Brainbox features a mix of heavy blues-rock originals and innovative reinterpretations of traditional and popular songs. Notable tracks include "Dark Rose," Tim Hardin's "Reason To Believe," and Jimmy Reed's "Baby, What You Want Me To Do." Additionally, the album includes a psychedelic rock version of Simon & Garfunkel's "Scarborough Fair," which stretches to six minutes in length. Gershwin's "Summertime" and Lowell Fulson's "Sinner's Prayer" are also reimagined within this album's framework.

One of the standout pieces is "Sea Of Delight," a lengthy, 17-minute psychedelic jam that occupies an entire side of the vinyl. This track exemplifies the band's willingness to explore extended compositions, a hallmark of the psychedelic rock movement of the late 1960s.

Band Changes

Shortly after the release of this album, Jan Akkerman departed from Brainbox to co-found the progressive rock band Focus. His exit was soon followed by Pierre van der Linden, marking a shift in the band's lineup shortly after their debut.
