Real To Reel
Starcastle's fourth studio album, titled Real To Reel, was released in October 1978 by Epic Records. This album marks a shift in the band's musical direction, moving away from their earlier complex symphonic progressive rock style. Instead, Real To Reel features more concise and catchy melodies that align with the AOR and power-pop genres. This transition was influenced in part by Epic Records' desire for radio-friendly singles.
The album was produced by Jeffrey Lesser, who also co-wrote several tracks. Lesser, along with engineer Tom Flye, recorded and mixed the album at The Record Plant in Sausalito, California. The production aimed to capture the band’s evolving sound while retaining elements of their progressive roots. This resulted in a collection of nine tracks that balance melody with rock instrumentation.
Among the notable tracks is "Half A Mind To Leave Ya," which opens the album with an upbeat tempo. "Whatcha Gonna Do (When It All Comes Down On You)" showcases the band’s ability to craft a radio-ready hook. "Song For Alaya" features lead vocals by guitarist Stephen Hagler, adding variety to the vocal arrangements. The album closes with "When The Sun Shines At Midnight," a progressive piece that reflects the band's earlier style.
This album features the classic lineup of Starcastle, consisting of Terry Luttrell on lead vocals, Stephen Hagler on guitar and piano, Matthew Stewart on lead guitar, Gary Strater on bass and clavinet, Herb Schildt on synthesizers and organ, and Stephen Tassler on drums and percussion. Real To Reel is significant as it was the last album recorded by this lineup before the departures of Luttrell and Hagler. It also marks the end of Starcastle's association with Epic Records.
