Overview of Catapilla's "Changes"

"Changes" is the second and final album by the British jazz-rock band Catapilla, released on June 15, 1972, through Vertigo Records. The album was recorded between 1971 and 1972 and showcases a shift in personnel from their debut album. Only three members from the original lineup returned for this release: Robert Calvert, Anna Meek, and Graham Wilson. The new members include Ralph Rolinson on organ and electric piano, Carl Wassard on electric bass, and Brian Hanson on drums.

Musical Composition

The album consists of four tracks, with a total runtime of 37:03. The longest track, "Reflections," spans 12:06 and offers a complex arrangement typical of the jazz-rock genre. "Charing Cross," lasting 6:45, features treated vocals from Anna Meek, which are heavily delayed, adding an atmospheric quality to the piece. The other two tracks, "Thank Christ For George" and "It Could Only Happen To Me," also reflect the band's eclectic style, blending rock and jazz elements seamlessly.

Production and Artwork

Colin Caldwell produced "Changes." The album's artwork features a die-cut gatefold sleeve that depicts a caterpillar eating a lettuce leaf, designed by Martin Dean. This visual representation aligns with the band's name and adds a distinct character to the vinyl release. The UK editions were pressed on the Vertigo "swirl" label, which is recognizable among collectors.

Band Dynamics

Following the release of "Changes," Catapilla disbanded later in 1972. The departure of original members and the introduction of new ones marked a transition for the group, which struggled to maintain a consistent lineup throughout its short career. Despite the challenges, the album reflects the unique blend of styles that characterized Catapilla's sound.

The album was recorded during a period of experimentation in the music scene, particularly within the jazz-rock genre. Catapilla's approach included instrumental improvisation and elaborate arrangements, which set them apart from their contemporaries.

Catapilla's "Changes" features Robert Calvert on soprano, alto, and tenor saxophones, as well as electric and acoustic instruments.
