"Product" is the fourth studio album by British jazz-fusion band Brand X, released in September 1979 under the Charisma label (catalog CAS 1147). The album was recorded at Startling Studios, located in Ascot, UK, which is known for being owned by Ringo Starr. This release was a response to record company pressures for commercial hits, leading to a unique structure featuring two distinct lineups.
The album features a dual lineup approach, allowing Brand X to explore different musical styles. The first lineup includes Phil Collins on drums and lead vocals, alongside John Giblin on fretless bass, Robin Lumley on keyboards, and John Goodsall on guitars. This group focuses on more accessible jazz-pop and fusion tracks such as "Don't Make Waves" and "Soho."
The second lineup features drummer Mike Clark, known for his work with Herbie Hancock, along with Percy Jones on fretless bass, Peter Robinson on keyboards, and Goodsall on electric guitars. This configuration dives into more technical and complex jazz-fusion compositions, including "Dance Of The Illegal Aliens" and "Algon."
Among the standout tracks is "...And So To F...", which showcases Collins’ musical prowess and became a staple in his live performances. The album also features "Wal To Wal," a bass duet between Percy Jones and John Giblin, highlighting their skill on fretless bass guitars. Another noteworthy piece is "Rhesus Perplexus," known for its intricate arrangement and interplay between musicians.
Brand X produced the album in collaboration with sound engineers Colin Green and Neil Kernon. The recording sessions took place in April and May 1979. This effort reflects the band’s innovative spirit and willingness to experiment within the jazz and rock genres.
“Product” demonstrates Brand X's versatility through its varied musical styles and dual lineups. The album's intricate compositions and engaging performances make it a distinctive entry in the jazz-rock fusion genre. It was recorded at Startling Studios in Ascot, UK.
