The Green Album
Eddie Jobson’s "The Green Album," released in 1983 and cataloged under Capitol Records (EST 12270 / ST-12270), marks his debut solo effort. This album is credited to Eddie Jobson / Zinc and features a striking translucent green vinyl format. Jobson, known for his work with bands such as Roxy Music, U.K., Curved Air, and Jethro Tull, takes center stage here as both composer and producer.
The album presents a loose dystopian science-fiction concept. It explores a color-coded totalitarian society, illustrated through Jobson's complex progressive rock style. The music blends 1980s art-rock with synth-pop elements. Jobson's electric violin and synthesizer work push the boundaries of the genre. The album employs the Yamaha CS-80, Minimoog, and Prophet-5, highlighting Jobson's technical prowess.
"The Green Album" consists of thirteen tracks divided across two sides. It opens with "Transporter" and closes with "Transporter 2." One of the standout tracks is "Easy For You To Say," which received airplay on MTV. Other notable songs include "Nostalgia," "Turn It Over," and "Color Code." Each track features intricate arrangements and showcases the collaborative contributions of Zinc musicians, including Michael Cuneo on electric guitars and Jerry Watts on bass.
The album was recorded at The Green Room in Connecticut and Boogie Hotel Studios in New York between 1982 and 1983. Jobson's role as producer and arranger is evident throughout the project. The contributions of guest musicians, such as Gary Green from Gentle Giant on the track "Turn It Over," add depth to the sound.
Instrumentation on "The Green Album" includes not only the Yamaha CS-80 synthesizer but also Jobson's signature transparent blue Barcus-Berry electric violin. This innovative instrument is used extensively throughout the album, contributing to its unique sound. Jobson's skillful use of the vocoder and acoustic piano further enhances the album's electronic rock aesthetic.
The album was released on green vinyl by Capitol Records in 1983.
