Introduction to Warhorse

In November 1970, the British band Warhorse released their self-titled debut studio album on the Vertigo label. This album features a blend of hard rock and progressive elements, making it a notable entry in the early '70s rock scene. Warhorse was formed by Nick Simper, the original bassist of Deep Purple, after he left the band in 1969.

Production Details

The album was produced by Ian Kimmet alongside the band members themselves. The engineering work was handled by Ken Scott at Trident Studios in London. The physical presentation of the album includes a gatefold sleeve with photography and design by Keef, also known as Keith MacMillan.

Musical Composition

Warhorse delivers a powerful sound characterized by a heavy use of Hammond organ, fuzz-laden guitars, and complex time signatures. The lead vocals are provided by Ashley Holt, who is known for his dramatic vocal style. The album consists of seven tracks, starting with the heavy opener "Vulture Blood." It also features a hard-hitting arrangement of "St. Louis," originally by The Easybeats. Other tracks include "Burning," "Ritual," "Solitude," and the seven-minute "Woman Of The Devil," which is often recognized as a proto-doom piece.

Band Lineup

The lineup for Warhorse includes Nick Simper on bass, Ashley Holt on lead vocals, Ged Peck on lead guitar, Frank Wilson on organ and piano, and Mac Poole on drums. Each member contributes to the album's distinct sound, reflecting their collective experience in the rock genre.

Release Format

This album was released as a vinyl LP, which was the standard format for music albums during this period. The Vertigo "swirl" label, known for its unique design, adds to the collectibility of this release.

Warhorse's debut album was released in November 1970 on the Vertigo label with the catalog number 6360 015.
