A Deeper Blue
The Petards, a German quartet from Schrecksbach, emerged in the music scene with their debut album, A Deeper Blue, released in 1968. The band consists of Klaus Ebert on lead vocals and guitar, Horst Ebert on rhythm guitar and backing vocals, Rüdiger "Roger" Waldmann on bass, and Arno Dittrich on drums. Their sound is characterized by infectious 1960s German beat music infused with elements of pop rock and early psychedelic influences.
Produced by Bert Varell, A Deeper Blue was engineered by Horst Andritschke. The band gained initial recognition after appearing on the German television talent show Talentschuppen in 1967. This exposure led to their signing with the Europa label, which released the album under catalog number E 346.
The album features twelve tracks that blend jangly Rickenbacker guitars with rich vocal harmonies. The Petards draw comparisons to contemporaries like The Kinks, The Hollies, and The Monkees. Songs such as "Sun Came Out At Seven" and "Firetree" exemplify their energetic beat music style. Early psychedelic pop elements can be heard in tracks like "A Deeper Blue" and "Love Is All Around." This blend of styles offers a glimpse into the diverse musical landscape of the late 1960s in Germany.
Among the standout tracks, "Summerwind" showcases the band's melodic sensibilities, while "If You Want To Go Away" and "I Won't Come Back" exhibit their lyrical depth. "Roses For Kathy" offers a softer, more introspective sound, contrasting the upbeat energy found in songs like "Drive" and "Confusion All Day." Each track contributes to the cohesive nature of the album while highlighting the band's versatility.
A Deeper Blue was released on vinyl LP format in 1968 by the Europa label.
