Introduction to Cotó-En-Pèl's Holocaust

Holocaust is the sole studio album by the Spanish symphonic progressive rock band Cotó-En-Pèl. Formed in Valencia in 1976, the quartet recorded this album at Estudios Kirios in Madrid. Released in 1978 on the Nevada label, Holocaust features a blend of Mediterranean influences with a distinctly progressive rock sound.

Band Lineup and Production

The band's lineup includes Pep Llopis on organ, synthesizer, Mellotron, and lead vocals. Llopis later gained recognition as a minimalist and contemporary composer. Carles Picó plays both acoustic and electric guitars, while Paco Cintero handles bass guitar, cornet, and vocals. Vicent Cortina completes the group on drums and percussion. The album was produced and arranged by the members of Cotó-En-Pèl themselves, reflecting their collaborative vision.

Musical Characteristics

Holocaust delivers a symphonic prog sound rich in textures. The use of Mellotron creates sweeping string and choir washes that enhance the ethereal quality of the music. Delicate acoustic guitar figures intertwine with blistering electric guitar leads, creating a dynamic listening experience. The lyrics are sung in Catalan, which connects the music to its cultural roots. The sound has drawn comparisons to influential bands such as King Crimson, Genesis, Triana, and Fusioon.

Album Structure

The album contains four expansive tracks across its two sides. Side A opens with the 13-minute epic "Aura De Sons," leading into the haunting "Lamentacions." Side B features a two-part suite titled "Holocaust." The first part lasts 10 minutes and 35 seconds, while the second part runs for 8 minutes and 8 seconds, totaling 19 minutes. This structure allows for expansive musical exploration throughout the album.
