The Kaplan Brothers
In 1973, the Kaplan Brothers, Ron and Donnie, released their self-titled album on their independent label, Kap Records. This Chicago-based sibling duo took a unique approach to their music, blending a variety of genres. Their sound incorporates elements of rock, pop, and progressive rock, along with outsider and lounge psych influences.
The album was arranged, produced, and performed entirely by the Kaplan brothers. They played a range of instruments, including acoustic and electric guitars, bass, keyboards, and percussion. This self-sufficient approach highlights their commitment to a personal artistic vision. The record is characterized by breezy acoustic lounge pop and lush vocal harmonies. Folk-rock instrumentation is prominent, and the brothers reinterpret popular songs from the 1960s and 70s with a spaced-out psych-pop flair.
The nine tracks on the album feature a mix of original compositions and covers. Noteworthy is their rendition of Spiral Starecase’s "More Today Than Yesterday," which showcases their vocal harmonies. They also cover the Bee Gees' "How Can I Mend A Broken Heart" and provide a fresh take on The Righteous Brothers’ classic "You Lost That Loving Feeling." An ambitious Beatles medley, titled "Because And Something Medley," showcases their ability to blend multiple influences into a cohesive sound. The album also includes a breezy folk-lounge version of "Hava Nagila," highlighting their eclectic style.
Released during a time when independent music was gaining traction, The Kaplan Brothers' album stands as a private-press artifact. It reflects the era's experimental spirit and the growing interest in alternative musical expressions. The album's diverse arrangements and unexpected song choices reveal the brothers' willingness to explore beyond conventional pop structures.
The Kaplan Brothers' self-titled debut was released in 1973 on Kap Records, catalog number KAP 1001 / KAP 7301.
