Straight To The Krankenhaus
Secret Oyster's "Straight To The Krankenhaus" is the fourth and final studio album by the Danish progressive jazz-rock fusion group. Released in 1976 by CBS, the album captures the band’s distinctive sound, which blends jazz elements with rock influences. It was recorded at Rosenberg Studio and Sweet Silence Studios in Copenhagen and mixed at the Record Plant in New York City.
The production of the album was handled by Poul Bruun, with mixing by Carmine Rubino and Corky Stasiak. The cover art was created by Kjell Jörstedt, featuring art direction by Peder Bundgaard and liner photography by Tue Lütken. This collaboration of creative minds contributes to the album's visual and auditory appeal.
The band lineup includes Karsten Vogel on soprano and alto saxophones, Claus Bøhling on electric and acoustic guitars, Kenneth Knudsen on acoustic and electric keyboards and synthesizers, Jess Stæhr on bass guitar, and Ole Streenberg on drums. Guest percussionist Kasper Winding adds further texture to the album. The tracks exhibit a polished, high-energy sound characterized by fiery guitar solos, intricate synthesizer leads, and tight polyrhythms. Lyrical saxophone lines enhance the jazz-rock fusion style, drawing comparisons to bands such as Weather Report and Mahavishnu Orchestra.
"Straight To The Krankenhaus" features nine tracks, including "Lindance" and "High Luminant Silver Patterns." Each piece showcases the band's ability to weave complex musical ideas into accessible compositions. The album explores various themes and moods, from the upbeat "Rubber Star" to the introspective "Stalled Angel," demonstrating the band's versatility.
This album marks an important chapter in the history of Danish progressive music. It was released under catalog number CBS 81434.
