Nordland
Released in early 1976 under Sky Records, "Nordland" is the debut studio album by the German band Streetmark. The album was recorded in October 1975 at Conny's Tonstudio, known for its innovative recording techniques. Streetmark's sound is a blend of electronic, rock, and progressive influences, characteristic of the Krautrock movement of the time.
"Nordland" features intricate arrangements and sophisticated musicianship. The album showcases the extensive keyboard work of Dorothea Raukes, who plays a variety of instruments, including the Hammond organ, Mellotron, and Moog synthesizers. Her classical training is evident in the album's rich textures and melodic development. Guitarist Thomas Schreiber complements Raukes with both electric and acoustic guitar work.
Side A includes a multi-part suite titled "House Of Three Windows," which features a progressive rock arrangement of The Beatles' "Eleanor Rigby." This track exemplifies the band's ability to fuse familiar melodies with original compositions. The epic "Amleth Saga" and the classical rock fusion piece "Italian Concert In Rock" further display the band's eclectic style and musical versatility.
Side B of the album is dedicated to the titular suite "Nordland," which is divided into four parts. This suite includes "Waves And Visions," a composition by sound engineer Conny Plank, along with "Lyster Fjord," "Ladoga," and "Reality Airport." Each section of the suite presents distinct musical themes and atmospheres, contributing to an immersive listening experience.
The production of "Nordland" was co-directed by Conny Plank, a notable figure in the German music scene, who played a crucial role in shaping the album's sound. His expertise in sound engineering and composition adds depth to the overall production. The album's sleeve design was crafted by Helga Bartkowiak, complementing the album's artistic vision.
Streetmark's "Nordland" stands as a detailed representation of 1970s German progressive rock, merging electronic elements with traditional rock frameworks. The album features a range of instruments, including synthesizers, organs, and guitars, creating a rich sonic landscape. It was released as a vinyl LP in 1976, catalog number sky 003.
