Growing
"Growing" is the third album by the British band Jonesy, released in November 1973 under Dawn Records. This album is an interesting blend of jazz, pop, rock, and psychedelic influences. It reflects the band's eclectic style and showcases their musicianship. The album was produced by Rupert Hine and recorded across two prominent London studios: Escape Studios and Air Studios, during September and October of the same year.
The compositions on "Growing" feature various instrumental elements that highlight the band's versatility. The opening track, "Can You Get That Together," sets a dynamic tone with its engaging rhythms and harmonies. "Waltz For Yesterday" brings a more melodic approach, while "Know Who Your Friends Are" introduces a playful yet thoughtful narrative. The title track, "Growing," presents an introspective vibe, seamlessly transitioning into the more upbeat "Hard Road." The album concludes with "Jonesy," which encapsulates the band's signature sound.
Instrumentation plays a crucial role throughout the album. Gypsy Jones provides lead vocals and electric bass, while Jamie Kaleth contributes with electric and acoustic pianos along with Mellotron. The album also features notable contributions from Ken Elliot on the ARP 2600 clavinet and Alan Bown on electric trumpet and flugelhorn, both of which are processed through an octave divider and synthesizer. The string arrangements by Simon Jeffes add a lush texture, enhancing the overall soundscape.
Upon its release, "Growing" was well-received and earned the Montreux Diamond Award for top rock/pop album in early 1974. The album's innovative blend of genres and high-quality production contributed to its positive reception. Additionally, the engineering work by Tony Taverner, along with remixing by John Punter and Steve Nye, ensured a polished final product.
"Growing" is a vinyl LP that exemplifies the diverse musical landscape of the early 1970s in the UK. The album features a total of six tracks and runs for approximately 38 minutes.
