Hickory Wind
In 1969, the Indiana-based band Hickory Wind released their only album under the Gigantic label. This private pressing carries the catalog number 830G-1104 and is a rare find, with only about 100 to 200 copies made. The band consisted of Mike McGuyer, Sonny Prentice, Alan Jones, and Bobby Strehl, each bringing their unique talents to the group.
Hickory Wind blended various musical styles, including West Coast acid-rock, folk harmonies, and garage-psych elements. Their sound is characterized by reverb-laden fuzz guitar and melancholic songwriting. The band’s diverse instrumentation includes lead and rhythm guitars, harmonica, acoustic piano, organ, and drums, showcasing their versatility as musicians.
The album was recorded in Evansville, Indiana, with H.G. Hatt serving as both producer and sound engineer. The recording sessions captured the band’s eclectic sound and laid the groundwork for the tracks that would define their debut album. The combination of their distinct musical influences and the local studio environment contributed to the album’s unique character.
Side A of the album includes tracks such as "I Don't Believe," "Time And Change," and "Transit Blues." Each song reflects the band’s ability to weave intricate melodies with thoughtful lyrics. Side B features "The Loner," "Mister Man," and the instrumental piece "New Albany Police Carnival," showcasing the band’s range and creativity. The closing track, "Judy," encapsulates their sound in a fitting way.
Following the release of their album, Sonny Prentice departed from Hickory Wind. The remaining members, McGuyer, Jones, and Strehl, went on to form the fuzz-rock power trio B.F. Trike. This transition marked a new chapter for the musicians as they continued to explore their musical paths.
Hickory Wind's self-titled album was privately pressed in 1969 and features a blend of psychedelic rock and folk elements.
