Parts
"Parts" is the second album by the Dutch band Brainbox, released in 1972. This album marks their final studio effort of the 1970s. It came out on the Harvest label, a subsidiary of EMI, and is cataloged under the number 5C 056-24551. The group's lineup underwent a major change prior to this release, with key members Jan Akkerman, Kaz Lux, and Pierre van der Linden leaving the band.
The new lineup featured Michel van Dijk as the lead vocalist and flutist. Van Dijk had previously played with Les Baroques and Ekseption, later joining the progressive rock group Alquin. Ron Meyjes took on the role of lead guitarist and harmonica player. Meyjes would later gain recognition in the band Earth and Fire. The rhythm section included Robert Verwey on bass and keyboards, alongside drummer Frans Smit, who also went on to be part of Earth and Fire.
"Parts" was produced by John B. Van Setten. The engineering was handled by Maarten Proost at Intertone Studios in Heemstede, Netherlands. The album's cover design was created by Jacques Bontje, further contributing to its unique presentation.
This album blends hard blues-rock with elements of symphonic progressive rock. It features dynamic changes and heavy guitar riffs. Notably, Ron Meyjes simulates bagpipes on the track "Scotch Ballad." The album includes nine tracks that range from blues-inflected pieces to more complex arrangements. The song "Drum And Thunder Suite" is a jazz composition by Benny Golson, which adds an interesting dimension to the album's overall sound.
Among the tracks, "A Face" and "You're Used To Be Warmer" present a mix of blues and rock influences. "What It's All About" showcases the band's ability to create intricate soundscapes. The final track, "When I Was Poor," closes the album with a heavy blues feel, rounding out the diverse musical styles explored throughout.
