Stadtmensch
Teller Bunte Knete, a collective formed during the late-1970s countercultural movement in West Berlin, released their debut album, Stadtmensch, in 1978. This album came out under the independent label Trikont, known for its left-wing focus. The catalog number for this release is US-45. Recorded in May 1978 at the ERD Tonstudio in West Berlin, the album reflects the political and social climate of the time.
Stadtmensch blends elements of political folk-rock and Krautrock. The band employs a mix of acoustic instruments such as mandolin, violin, and harmonica alongside electric guitars and rock rhythms. Their lyrics are satirical, addressing themes of urban life, environmental concerns, and the contrast between city living and pastoral escapes. The title track "Stadtmensch" opens the album, setting the tone for the exploration of these themes.
The lineup of Teller Bunte Knete features several notable musicians. Paul Esslinger serves as the lead vocalist and plays bass guitar and various percussion instruments. Schnerdi Gminski contributes lead vocals and bells. Hurnush Kubica adds acoustic and electric guitars, mandolin, and vocals. Hannjörg Merklin plays mandolin, acoustic guitar, harmonica, drums, and provides vocals. Werner Rohde handles rhythm guitar, violin, and vocals. Udo Arndt, known for his work in Os Mundi, is the sound recording engineer on this project, also appearing as a guest organist on one track. The album's cover design and photography are attributed to Esslinger and Anne Altmeier, respectively.
The recording took place at ERD Tonstudio, which was recognized for its role in the Berlin music scene. Udo Arndt's engineering played a crucial role in capturing the band's unique sound. The mastering was done by Tonstudio Pfanz, ensuring the final product was polished for its vinyl release. This attention to detail in both recording and production highlights the band's commitment to their craft.
Stadtmensch features a total of twelve tracks, with a hopeful closing ballad titled "Hoffnung" that includes Udo Arndt on organ.
