King Crimson's debut album, In The Court Of The Crimson King (An Observation By King Crimson), was released by Island Records in October 1969. The recording took place at Wessex Sound Studios in London from July 7 to August 13, 1969. The band self-produced the album after an initial collaboration with producer Tony Clarke in early July did not proceed. The album is presented on vinyl in LP format and falls within the rock and prog rock genres.

Recording Process

The album was engineered by Robin Thompson, with assistance from Tony Page. The dense orchestral texture of the music was largely created by keyboardist and woodwind player Ian McDonald. He utilized the Mellotron extensively, layering multiple overdubs with woodwinds and reeds to achieve a rich sound. This effort contributed to the album's distinctive sonic landscape.

Artistic Contributions

Greg Lake played the bass guitar and provided lead vocals, while Michael Giles handled the drums, percussion, and vocals. Robert Fripp contributed guitar work, and Ian McDonald’s role extended to various instruments, including keyboards and vibraphone. The lyrics were penned by Peter Sinfield, who also provided illumination for the album’s visual presentation. The cover art, depicting a screaming face, was created by Barry Godber, a friend of Sinfield. This artwork was Godber's only album cover, and he passed away shortly after the album's release in February 1970.
