Introduction to Lizard

Released on December 11, 1970, Lizard is King Crimson's third studio album. The band recorded it at Wessex Sound Studios in London during September of the same year. Released under Island Records in the UK, this album features a mix of progressive rock and jazz influences.

Production and Collaboration

Robert Fripp, the band's guitarist, produced the album alongside lyricist Peter Sinfield. For this record, Fripp expanded the lineup by including several session musicians. Jazz pianist Keith Tippett contributed on keyboards, while brass and woodwind players such as Mark Charig (cornet), Robin Miller (oboe, cor anglais), and Nick Evans (trombone) added depth to the sound. This incorporation of additional instruments gives Lizard a more complex texture compared to earlier releases.

Musical Structure

The album consists of several tracks, with the second side devoted entirely to the 23-minute title suite, Lizard. This suite is divided into distinct sections, beginning with "Prince Rupert Awakes." It features a broad range of musical ideas, including dissonant Mellotron interludes that create a unique atmosphere. The song "Happy Family" showcases the blend of rock and jazz elements that characterize the album. Gordon Haskell, who plays bass and provides vocals, and drummer Andy McCulloch, both new to King Crimson, deliver a fresh dynamic throughout the record.

Guest Contributions

Yes vocalist Jon Anderson lends his voice to the "Prince Rupert Awakes" section, adding another layer to the album's diverse sound. His inclusion came through a connection with Greg Lake, a previous member of King Crimson, demonstrating the band's openness to collaboration.

The engineering for Lizard was handled by Robin Thompson, ensuring a polished sound throughout the recording. The album cover features an outside painting by Gini Barris, complementing the visual presentation of the music.
