Red
Released on October 6, 1974, Red is the seventh studio album by the British rock band King Crimson. The album came out under Island Records in the UK and Atlantic Records in North America and Japan. This release marked a transitional phase for the band, as it was recorded during a time of lineup changes and internal restructuring.
Recording took place at Olympic Studios in London during July and August of 1974. The core lineup for the sessions consisted of guitarist Robert Fripp, bassist and vocalist John Wetton, and drummer Bill Bruford. Violinist David Cross left the band during the recording but contributed to some tracks as a guest artist. Additionally, former members Ian McDonald and Mel Collins made guest appearances, playing alto and soprano saxophones respectively.
The album features a blend of rock and progressive rock elements. It opens with the title track "Red," which sets a heavy, intense tone. Other notable tracks include "Fallen Angel" and "One More Red Nightmare," both of which showcase the band's complex arrangements. The closing track, "Starless," is particularly distinctive, running approximately twelve minutes and divided into three distinct musical sections. This track highlights the band's ability to combine intricate melodies with improvisational elements.
Shortly before the album's release, Robert Fripp disbanded King Crimson on September 24, 1974. This decision meant the band did not tour to promote Red. The album stands as the last studio effort from King Crimson in the 1970s, marking the end of an era for the group.
Red was self-produced by King Crimson. The engineering was handled by George Chkiantz. The album's cover art was designed by John Kosh, while Gered Mankowitz provided photography for the release. These contributions helped shape the visual identity of the album, complementing its musical content.
King Crimson's Red features contributions from several musicians, including violinist David Cross, who played on select tracks despite his departure from the band during recording sessions.
