Musical Composition

The album includes nine tracks, many of which feature orchestral arrangements by Tony Cox. This incorporation of brass and string sections was a point of contention, particularly for guitarist Peter Banks, who disagreed with the orchestration approach. The band members, including Bill Bruford, Chris Squire, Jon Anderson, and Tony Kaye, contribute to the album's rich sound. Tracks such as "No Opportunity Necessary, No Experience Needed," a cover of Richie Havens' song, and "Everydays," originally by Stephen Stills, highlight the band's willingness to reinterpret existing works while also including original compositions. Jon Anderson's songwriting is prominent throughout the album.

Band Dynamics and Lineup Changes

During the recording sessions, tensions within the band escalated, primarily due to Banks' opposition to the orchestral elements. This discord culminated in Banks' dismissal from Yes during their UK tour in April 1970, just before the album's release. He was replaced by guitarist Steve Howe, who is featured on the album's cover art in some territories, despite not playing on the record itself. The original UK cover featured a nude woman, which was later altered for the US market to a photograph of the band, following concerns regarding its appropriateness.

The album was produced by Tony Colton and engineered by Eddy Offord. The design coordination was handled by Graphreaks, while photography and design were carried out by Laurence Sackman. The orchestral arrangements added a layer of complexity to the band's sound, helping to shape the evolving genre of progressive rock during this period.
