Shamal
"Shamal," released in February 1976, marks a crucial shift in the musical direction of Gong. This album was produced by Nick Mason, the drummer from Pink Floyd, and represents the band’s evolution from psychedelic space-rock to a sophisticated blend of jazz-rock fusion and world music. The recording took place in December 1975 at Basing Street Studios and Olympic Studios in London, UK.
With the departure of founding members Daevid Allen and Gilli Smyth, Mike Howlett took the lead as the bassist and primary musical director. Pierre Moerlen, who contributed with drums, vibraphone, and tubular bells, helped shape the unique sound of the album. The instrumentation showcases a rich tapestry of textures, featuring marimba and percussion from Mireille Bauer, and Middle Eastern-inspired bamboo flutes and saxophones played by Didier Malherbe.
The album features six tracks, each with distinct musical characteristics. The opening piece, "Wingful Of Eyes," is a jazz-funk vocal track featuring guest guitarist Steve Hillage. This track sets a vibrant tone for the album. "Chandra" offers a cosmic instrumental experience, while "Bambooji" incorporates East-Asian folk influences, demonstrating the band's diverse musical palette.
Gong's lineup for this album included Mike Howlett on bass guitar and lead vocals, Pierre Moerlen on drums and percussion, Didier Malherbe on saxophones and flutes, and Mireille Bauer on various percussion instruments. Patrice Lemoine contributed with keyboards, including the Hammond organ and Minimoog synthesizer. Guest musicians included Jorge Pinchevsky, who played violin, and Miquette Giraudy, who provided additional vocals on "Bambooji."
The cover design and photography were handled by Clive Arrowsmith, adding a visual element to the album's artistic vision. The production by Nick Mason ensured a polished sound that complemented Gong's innovative approach to blending genres.
"Shamal" was cataloged under Virgin Records as V 2046.
