"Close To The Edge" is the fifth studio album by the British progressive rock band Yes. Released on September 13, 1972, by Atlantic Records, the album features a unique combination of complex musical arrangements and thematic depth. The recording took place at Advision Studios in London from April to June 1972. During this time, the band members engaged in an intricate and demanding recording process that influenced both the album's sound and the dynamics within the group.

Recording Process

None of the tracks were fully composed before entering the studio, leading to a fluid and organic development of the music. The arrangements became so complex that band members occasionally lost track of previously established parts. Drummer Bill Bruford, who played a crucial role in the album's creation, decided to leave Yes shortly after its completion. He departed on July 19, 1972, to join King Crimson, marking "Close To The Edge" as his final studio album with the band.

Musical Structure

The album consists of just three main pieces. The title track, "Close to the Edge," is a four-part suite that occupies the entirety of side one. This ambitious composition includes sections titled "The Solid Time of Change," "Total Mass Retain," "I Get Up I Get Down," and "Seasons of Man." The second piece, "And You and I," also features four parts: "Cord of Life," "Eclipse," "The Preacher the Teacher," and "The Apocalypse." The album concludes with "Siberian Khatru," which showcases the band's musical versatility.

The cover art for "Close To The Edge" was created by illustrator Roger Dean, known for his distinctive style that has become synonymous with the band's visual identity. Dean also designed the album's logo lettering. The artwork reflects the album's themes and the intricate soundscapes that Yes is known for, enhancing the overall presentation of the record.
