Introduction to Ibis

The Italian band Ibis released their self-titled album in April 1975 under the Polydor label. This marked the band’s third studio album, following their earlier works "Canti D'Innocenza, Canti D'Esperienza" in 1973 and "Sun Supreme" in 1974. The group had undergone changes in its lineup since their previous releases, reflecting a shift in their musical direction.

Band Members and Lineup Changes

By the time of this album, Ibis was led by guitarist and vocalist Nico Di Palo, who had previously been part of the band New Trolls. He was joined by guitarist Renzo Tortora and drummer Pasquale Venditto, both of whom were formerly with Forum Livii. This lineup replaced earlier members Maurizio Salvi and Jean-Luc Parnell. The album featured a collaborative composition process, with tracks primarily written by Di Palo and bassist Frank Laugelli, alongside contributions from Tortora and Salvi.

Recording Process

The recording of this album primarily took place at Studio J.S. Bach in Milan, a facility known for its acoustic qualities. The track "Passa Il Tempo" was recorded separately at Phonogram Studios, indicating a distinct approach to this particular song. The production was managed by the band itself, with mixing handled by Nino Jorio.

Musical Style and Themes

Ibis' self-titled release is characterized by its blend of rock, hard rock, and progressive rock elements. Most of the tracks are sung in Italian, with two exceptions: "Dedicated To Janis Joplin" and "Keep On Movin'," which present lyrics in English. The themes explored in the album range from introspective reflections to tributes, as seen in the homage to the iconic singer Janis Joplin.

Aftermath of the Release

After the release of this album, Nico Di Palo departed from Ibis to reunite with New Trolls later in 1975. This decision led to the eventual disbandment of Ibis, marking the end of a chapter for the group. The album itself serves as a representation of their sound and the evolution they underwent during their brief time together.

Technical Details

The album was assigned catalog number 2448 036 L, which identifies it within Polydor's discography. The engineering for most tracks was performed by Nino Jorio, contributing to the album's production quality.
