Babe Ruth
The self-titled album "Babe Ruth," released in February 1975, is the third studio LP by the British band Babe Ruth. Distributed by Harvest Records (catalog SHSP 4038), this album marks a significant moment in the band's evolution, as it is the final record to feature founding guitarist and composer Alan Shacklock. The album was recorded at Lansdowne and Chappell Studios in London during late 1974.
Babe Ruth blends various musical styles, including rock, progressive rock, funk rock, and soul-rock. The album opens with "Dancer," a six-minute track that features hard-funk elements alongside progressive rock arrangements. Jenny Haan’s lead vocals drive the energetic sound. The lineup also includes Steve Gurl on keyboards, whose contributions on the Steinway Grand Piano and Moog synthesizer enhance the band’s rich sonic palette.
One of the standout tracks is the Latin-rock interpretation of Ennio Morricone’s "A Fistful Of Dollars," which showcases the band’s versatility. The album also features a soulful cover of Curtis Mayfield's "We People Darker Than Blue," reflecting their ability to traverse genres with ease. Other tracks such as "Jack O'Lantern" and "The Duchess Of Orleans" further illustrate the band's progressive rock influences.
Produced by Steve Rowland, the album benefits from polished production and a well-defined sound. The engineering team, which included Ashley Howe and John Iles, played a crucial role in capturing the band's dynamic performances. The album's cover features striking portrait photography by Gered Mankowitz, adding a visual dimension to the music. The gatefold packaging and full-color design enhance the overall presentation of the album.
The final album for Alan Shacklock, "Babe Ruth" was released in February 1975 and includes nine tracks that explore a range of musical styles.
