Nude
"Nude" is the eighth studio album by English progressive rock band Camel, released in January 1981 under Decca Records. This album is a concept piece inspired by the true story of Hiroo Onoda, a Japanese soldier who remained isolated on Lubang Island for nearly three decades after World War II. The narrative behind the album was conceived by Susan Hoover and Andy Latimer, the band's guitarist and vocalist.
The album was co-produced by the band alongside Haydn Bendall and Tony Clark at the famous Abbey Road Studios in London. The recording sessions brought together several key musicians. In addition to Latimer, the lineup featured keyboardists Jan Schelhaas and Duncan Mackay, bassist Colin Bass, and drummer Andy Ward. Notably, "Nude" marks Ward's final studio contribution to Camel before his departure from the band. The album also includes guest appearances by cellist Chris Green and percussionist Gasper Lawal.
The music on "Nude" reflects Camel's progressive rock roots while also incorporating a more narrative-driven approach. Latimer's guitar work is prominent throughout the album, complemented by Schelhaas and Mackay's keyboard arrangements. The lyrics, penned by Hoover, provide the emotional backdrop to the story of isolation and perseverance, highlighting the experiences of Onoda. The album's sound blends melodic elements with intricate arrangements, a hallmark of Camel's style.
"Nude" was made available in various formats, including vinyl and LP, catering to both collectors and new listeners. The album's release in January 1981 allowed it to capture the attention of the progressive rock audience during a time of transition within the genre. The album's narrative depth, combined with Camel's musicianship, contributed to its reception among fans of the band.
The album's catalog number is SKL 5323. "Nude" features a blend of rock instrumentation, with a focus on guitar, keyboard, and orchestral elements, highlighting Camel's ability to create an immersive listening experience.
