Honey Is Sweeter Than Blood
Released in 1976, "Honey Is Sweeter Than Blood" is the second and final studio album by the American Latin-rock band Chango. The album features a lineup led by Pepe Gomez, who contributes lead vocals, keyboards, drums, and percussion. The group transitioned from ABC Records to Mercury Records for this release, marking a significant change in their musical journey.
The album's title pays homage to Salvador Dalí's famous 1927 painting, "Honey Is Sweeter Than Blood" ("La miel es más dulce que la sangre"). This artistic reference sets the tone for the album's exploration of vibrant themes and complex musical compositions. Chango's sound combines high-energy Latin rock with Afro-Cuban polyrhythms, hard-rock guitar riffs, and punchy brass arrangements. The trumpet contributions by Steve Madaio, a skilled horn arranger, add a distinctive flair to the band's sound.
"Honey Is Sweeter Than Blood" contains nine tracks that each showcase the band's unique style. The album opens with "Life Is A Rainbow," an uplifting track that sets a positive mood. Other highlights include "Meeting Of The Gods," a spiritual jam that demonstrates their improvisational skills, and "La Rumbia," a fiery salsa-rock workout. The closing track, "Evil Lady," presents a hard-rocking finale that contrasts sharply with the more mellow moments within the album.
The album was recorded at BRT Studios in Nashville and Two Dot Studios in Ojai, California. The choice of locations contributed to the album's diverse sound and lively energy. Chango's lineup showcases a variety of instruments, including congas, timbales, bass guitar, and acoustic guitar, all of which enhance the rich textures present throughout the album.
"Honey Is Sweeter Than Blood" is available on vinyl, categorized under Mercury Records with catalog number SRM-1-1103.
