Illusion
Renaissance's album "Illusion" was released in 1970 under Island Records in the UK. This album captures a transitional period for the band. It features a blend of rock, art rock, and progressive rock elements, showcasing the talents of various musicians involved in its creation. "Illusion" was produced by band member Keith Relf and recorded during the spring and summer of 1970.
The recording sessions for "Illusion" coincided with significant changes within the band. Drummer Jim McCarty announced his departure in July 1970 due to health issues. Keith Relf also ceased performing with the group, although he continued in a production role. The album was initially intended to be a full-length project; however, with insufficient material, the remaining members regrouped to complete the album. Notably, keyboardist John Hawken was absent during these later sessions. Guest musician Don Shinn contributed electric piano to the lengthy track "Past Orbits Of Dust."
Among the album's offerings, "Love Is All" features lyrics by Thatcher and showcases the vocal talents of Relf and Jane Relf. The song "Mr. Pine" stands out as the only track on a Renaissance album to feature contributions from both John Hawken and Jane Relf alongside guitarist Michael Dunford. The collaboration on this track involved session musicians such as Terry Crowe, who provided lead vocals, and Neil Korner and T. Slade, who played bass and drums respectively.
"Illusion" exemplifies the band's art rock and progressive rock stylings with intricate arrangements and varied song structures. The album includes tracks that range from concise songs like "Love Goes On" to the expansive "Past Orbits Of Dust," which runs over fourteen minutes. This variety showcases the band's willingness to experiment with different musical forms and styles within the rock genre.
In addition to the performances of the original members, "Illusion" features contributions from several session musicians who helped shape the album's sound. Louis Cennamo played bass on several tracks, while Andrew Johns served as the engineer for the project. Paul Whitehead designed the original sleeve artwork, adding a visual dimension to the album's presentation.
