Sun Supreme
In 1974, the Italian progressive rock band Ibis released their second album, "Sun Supreme," under the Polydor label. This record marked a pivotal moment for the group as it was their first release after signing with this major label. The lineup for this album included key members who had previously played in notable bands, enhancing their musical pedigree.
"Sun Supreme" is structured into two side-long suites, each offering an immersive listening experience. The first suite, titled "Divine Mountain / Journey Of Life," consists of four interconnected parts. It showcases elaborate compositions, blending intricate keyboard work from Maurizio Salvi with guitar from Nico Di Palo. The second suite, "Divinity," is dedicated to Satguru Maharaji and his followers, further emphasizing the band's thematic focus on spirituality and introspection.
Distinctively, Ibis chose to write lyrics in English for this album, which differentiates them from many of their contemporaries in the Italian prog scene. The lyrics, crafted by Franck Laugelli and Rick Parnell, delve into themes of life’s journey and existential exploration. This approach mirrors the lyrical depth often found in the works of British progressive rock bands, particularly Yes, which influenced Ibis's sound.
The album features contributions from various musicians. Rick Parnell, previously of Atomic Rooster, took on the role of drummer and vocalist, while Franck Laugelli played bass and provided additional vocals. Maurizio Salvi's keyboard arrangements drive much of the album’s sound. The production was handled by Ibis themselves, allowing them creative control over their artistic vision.
The visual aspect of "Sun Supreme" also deserves attention. The album cover artwork was designed by Convertino and Giardini, complementing the album's thematic elements and enhancing the listener's experience. The vinyl format was typical for the era, providing a tangible connection to the music.
Released in 1974, "Sun Supreme" is a vinyl album by Ibis, featuring a blend of progressive rock and spiritual themes.
