Introduction to Cherry Five

Cherry Five is a progressive rock band from Rome, Italy. The group released their self-titled album in 1975 under the Cinevox label. This album marks the only studio effort by the band, which consisted of members Tony Tartarini (lead vocals), Claudio Simonetti (keyboards), Massimo Morante (guitar), Fabio Pignatelli (bass), and Carlo Bordini (drums).

Musical Style and Influences

The music of Cherry Five is heavily influenced by British progressive rock bands such as Yes, Genesis, and Emerson, Lake & Palmer. The album features complex arrangements, intricate melodies, and a blend of rock and classical elements. The lyrics are written and sung in English, a choice that aligns with their musical influences. Tracks like "Country Grave-Yard" and "The Picture Of Dorian Gray" exemplify their progressive rock style, incorporating lengthy instrumental sections and dynamic shifts.

Production and Arrangement

Carlo Bixio produced the album, ensuring a polished sound that complements the band’s ambitious compositions. The instrumental interplay is notable, with each musician contributing to the overall texture. Fabio Pignatelli's bass lines provide a solid foundation while Claudio Simonetti’s keyboard work adds layers of depth. Massimo Morante's guitar solos are prominent, showcasing his technical skill and creativity. The album also features a two-part track titled "The Swan Is A Murderer," which further highlights the band's ability to blend narrative and music.

Transition to Goblin

Shortly after the album's release, the band transitioned to a new project. They were recruited by director Dario Argento to rework the soundtrack for his film "Profondo Rosso" (Deep Red). However, drummer Carlo Bordini and vocalist Tony Tartarini left the group due to concerns about their careers and the direction of the band. The remaining members, Simonetti, Morante, and Pignatelli, continued under the name Goblin, achieving further success in film scoring.
