Introduction to "The Polite Force"

Egg's second album, "The Polite Force," was released in 1970 under the Deram label. This album followed their debut and continued to explore the unique sound of the band, characterized by a distinctive organ-bass-drums trio format. Recorded at Morgan Studios in London, the album showcases the band's innovative approach to rock music during a time when the genre was rapidly evolving.

Musical Composition

The album opens with "A Visit To Newport Hospital," a track that runs over eight minutes and features contributions from all three core members: Mont Campbell on bass and vocals, Clive Brooks on drums, and Dave Stewart on organ and piano. This track sets the tone for the album with its complex arrangements and thought-provoking lyrics. The second track, "Contrasong," introduces a brass section with notable performances from trumpet players Henry Lowther and Mike Davis, as well as saxophonists Bob Downes and Tony Roberts, adding depth to the composition.

One of the standout tracks is "Boilk," which incorporates a classical arrangement of Johann Sebastian Bach's chorale "Durch Adams Fall Ist Ganz Verderbt." This incorporation of classical elements into rock music illustrates Egg's willingness to experiment and blend genres. The album also features a lengthy suite titled "Long Piece No. 3," which is divided into four distinct parts. This suite allows the band to explore themes and motifs over an extended time, showcasing their musicianship and ability to create intricate compositions.

Post-Release Context

After "The Polite Force," Egg ceased recording as a group for an extended period. Keyboardist Dave Stewart transitioned to join Hatfield and the North, a prominent band in the progressive rock scene. The trio reunited briefly in 1974 for their final album, "The Civil Surface," marking the end of their initial run.
