Banchee
Banchee was a New York-based band that emerged in the late 1960s, releasing their self-titled debut album in October 1969 under Atlantic Records. The album, catalog number SD 8240, features a blend of rock, psychedelic rock, and hard rock, showcasing the band's diverse musical influences.
The core lineup of Banchee consisted of Peter Alongi on lead guitar and vocals, Michael Marino on bass and vocals, Jose "Joey" Miguel DeJesus on guitar and vocals, and Victor DiGilio on drums. Each member contributed to the songwriting process, with Alongi and DeJesus being particularly prolific. The album's production was handled by Warren Schatz, with Ralph V. Alfoumado serving as the conductor for the strings and horns. Notably, the track "Follow A Dream" features conga performances by Johnny Pacheco, a significant figure in the salsa music scene.
Banchee's music blends various elements of rock, characterized by energetic guitar riffs and harmonious vocals. The tracks explore themes of life, dreams, and personal reflection. For instance, "The Night Is Calling" sets a contemplative tone, while "Train Of Life" delivers a more upbeat rhythm. The album also features longer compositions, such as "Tom's Island," which extends for nearly nine minutes, allowing for intricate musical explorations.
Upon its release, Banchee's debut album received attention for its unique sound and the skilled musicianship of its members. The band followed up with a second album, "Thinkin'," released on Polydor in 1971. However, Banchee disbanded shortly after, marking a brief but interesting chapter in the rock music scene of the late 1960s and early 1970s.
Among the standout tracks, "Beautifully Day" and "I Just Don't Know" exemplify the band's knack for melody and lyrical depth. "Evolmia," co-written by DeJesus and DiGilio, showcases the group's collaborative spirit. The blend of rock elements with Latin influences, particularly noticeable in the conga work, adds a distinctive flair to their sound.
Banchee's self-titled album was released on October 24, 1969.
