Renaissance's "Prologue": A New Beginning

In 1972, Renaissance emerged anew with their album "Prologue," marking a significant transformation for the band. After the dissolution of their original lineup, the group reformed with a fresh set of musicians. The core members included vocalist Annie Haslam and keyboardist John Tout, both previously involved in other musical projects. They were joined by guitarist Rob Hendry, bassist Jon Camp, and drummer Terence Sullivan.

Recording Details

"Prologue" was recorded at Nova Sound Studios in London during June and July of 1972. The album was produced by Miles Copeland, who would later establish I.R.S. Records. The recording sessions sought to capture the band's new direction, blending elements of rock, symphonic rock, and progressive rock. The album released under the Sovereign label in October 1972.

Musical Composition

The album opens with the title track, "Prologue," which introduces listeners to the band's evolving sound. The song, written by guitarist Mick Dunford, features intricate arrangements and a distinct blend of musical styles. Another notable track is "Kiev," co-written by Thatcher and McCarty, showcasing a fusion of melodic lines and rhythmic complexity.

In addition, "Sounds of the Sea," co-written by Thatcher and Dunford, adds to the album's atmospheric quality with its evocative lyrics and lush instrumentation. The closing track, "Rajah Kahn," features a synthesizer solo by Francis Monkman, highlighting the band's willingness to experiment with new sounds and technologies.
