Fireballet is an American band that emerged from New Jersey in the early 1970s. Their debut album, titled Night On Bald Mountain, was released in June 1975 under Passport Records. The album features a mix of rock genres, including hard rock, progressive rock, and classic rock elements, making it a notable entry in the era's music scene.

Recording and Production

The album was recorded between February and April 1975 at Broadway Recording Studios in New York City. Ian McDonald, known for his work with King Crimson, produced the album. He also contributed flute and saxophone parts, enriching the band's sound with his expertise. The band members include Ryche Chlanda on electric and acoustic guitar and vocals, Martyn Biglin on bass and guitar, Bryan Howe on organ and vocals, Frank Petto on piano and synthesizers, and Jim Como on drums and vocals. Bob Ludwig handled the mastering, ensuring a polished final product.

Musical Composition

Night On Bald Mountain features a blend of original compositions and classical adaptations. The album opens with "Les Cathedrales," a lengthy piece composed by Jim Como that runs over ten minutes. This track sets the stage for the band's intricate musical style. Another significant track is "Centurion (Tales Of Fireball Kids)," which showcases the band's storytelling ability through music.

The second side of the album presents a suite inspired by Modest Mussorgsky's "Night on Bald Mountain" and Claude Debussy's "The Engulfed Cathedral." These classical pieces are reimagined with rock arrangements, demonstrating the band's ambition to merge different musical worlds. The suite includes various segments, including "Night-Tale," which features contributions from all band members, highlighting their collaborative spirit.
