The album is humorously packaged as a 12-page local newspaper, titled The St. Cleve Chronicle and Linwell Advertiser. This unique design includes fake articles, crosswords, and competition adverts, enhancing the satirical nature of the project.

Musical Composition

Thick As A Brick is characterized by its complex musical structure. It encompasses various musical styles, including acoustic English folk, hard rock, and Renaissance polyphony. The album transitions through different time signatures and moods, featuring intricate arrangements and solos. Notably, it includes jazz flute segments that showcase Anderson's flute skills and electric guitar sections played by Martin Barre.

Recording Details

The album marks the recording debut of drummer Barriemore Barlow, who replaced Clive Bunker. Barlow's dynamic drumming contributes to the album's intricate rhythms. The rest of the lineup features Ian Anderson on lead vocals and multiple instruments, including flute and acoustic guitar. John Evan plays the Hammond organ and piano, while Jeffrey Hammond-Hammond provides bass guitar and spoken word sections. The album was recorded at Morgan Studios in London during December 1971, with production overseen by Terry Ellis.
