Raindance
Released in 1975, 'Raindance' marks Gryphon's fourth studio album and their final project with Transatlantic Records. The album carries the catalog number TRA 302. Most of the recording took place at Sawmills Studios in Cornwall during June and July 1975. However, the track "Wallbanger" was recorded earlier, in October 1974, at PSL Studios in London using the Manor Mobile.
'Raindance' features a blend of rock, folk rock, and progressive rock elements. The album includes an arrangement of "Mother Nature's Son," originally by Lennon and McCartney, showcasing Gryphon's ability to reinterpret well-known songs. In addition to original tracks, the album also includes "Le Cabrioleur Est Dans Le Mouchoir," with lyrics by Malcolm Bennett, highlighting the band's eclectic influences.
The album's instrumentation is diverse. Richard Harvey plays instruments such as the Mini-Moog synthesizer, grand piano, and various flutes. Malcolm Bennett contributes bass and flute, while Graeme Taylor provides guitar and backing vocals. Dave Oberlé plays drums and takes lead vocals on "Mother Nature's Son" and "Don't Say Go." This album is also the last to feature Taylor on guitar, marking a transition for the band.
The album was produced by Gryphon themselves, with Richard Elen serving as co-producer and engineer. Mastering was done by Porky, a notable figure in the vinyl production scene. The artwork was designed by Philip Warr and features illustrations by Tony Wright, adding a visual element that complements the music.
'Raindance' contains tracks that vary significantly in length, from brief interludes like "Ormolu" to the lengthy composition "(Ein Klein) Heldenleben," which spans over 16 minutes. This variety adds depth to the listening experience and showcases the band's range within the progressive rock genre.
The recording process at Sawmills Studios allowed for a unique sound, influenced by the natural surroundings of Cornwall. This environment may have shaped the album's overall feel. The blend of traditional and modern instruments provides a distinctive sonic palette that Gryphon is known for.
Gryphon's 'Raindance' was released in 1975 on vinyl, LP format, and is categorized under rock, folk rock, and prog rock. The album's catalog number is TRA 302.
