Exploring "Tales From Topographic Oceans"

Released in December 1973, "Tales From Topographic Oceans" is the sixth studio album by the English progressive rock band Yes. This album is a conceptual double LP that consists of four side-long suites. The idea for the album emerged from lead vocalist Jon Anderson's reading of a footnote related to the four Hindu Shastras in the spiritual memoir "Autobiography of a Yogi" by Paramahansa Yogananda. Anderson collaborated with guitarist Steve Howe to develop the concept into music.

Composition and Structure

The album features four tracks, each lasting over 18 minutes. These tracks are structured as extended pieces that explore various themes and musical motifs. Side one begins with "The Revealing Science of God (Dance of the Dawn)," followed by "The Remembering (High the Memory)" on side two. Side three presents "The Ancient (Giants Under the Sun)," and the album concludes with "Ritual (Nous Sommes Du Soleil)." Each piece showcases the band's musical virtuosity and intricate arrangements, combining rock elements with classical influences.

Recording and Production

Yes recorded "Tales From Topographic Oceans" at Morgan Studios in London between August and October 1973. The production was handled by Eddie Offord, who had previously worked with the band. During the recording sessions, the band created a unique atmosphere by decorating the studio with model cows, hay bales, and potted plants. This creative environment contributed to the album's expansive sound.

Cover Art

The album's gatefold cover was designed by Roger Dean, known for his distinctive artwork associated with progressive rock. The cover depicts ancient monoliths and marine constellations, complementing the album's thematic content. Dean's artwork has become an integral part of the band's visual identity.

Commercial Performance

"Tales From Topographic Oceans" achieved commercial success, reaching No. 1 on the UK Albums Chart. It became the first UK LP to be certified Gold based on advance pre-orders alone. In the United States, it peaked at No. 6 on the Billboard 200 chart. This album marked a significant moment in Yes's career and contributed to their growing popularity.

Yes's "Tales From Topographic Oceans" was released by Atlantic Records as catalog number K 80001.
