Exploring Mandalaband's Self-Titled Album

Released in October 1975, the self-titled album "Mandalaband" by the British progressive rock group Mandalaband is an ambitious concept piece. The album was released under the Chrysalis label, with catalog numbers CHR 1095 and CHR 1091. It was recorded in several prestigious studios, including Strawberry Studios in Stockport and Wessex Sound Studios in London.

A Unique Concept

The album was conceived by David Rohl, who served as the concept creator and composer. Rohl, who later became a well-known Egyptologist, crafted a narrative that focuses on the 1959 Tibetan uprising against Chinese invasion. This thematic choice adds depth and context to the album, making it more than just a collection of songs.

Musical Composition

Mandalaband's sound is characterized by its heavy symphonic progressive rock instrumentation. The album features a mix of electric and acoustic guitars, keyboards, and a powerful choral arrangement. A standout feature is the 45-member London Chorale, which adds a grand choral dimension to the music, conducted by Roy Wales. The first side of the album is dominated by a continuous 20-minute choral suite titled "Om Mani Padme Hum," which consists of four movements. This suite is complemented on the second side by four individual tracks, including "Determination" and "Song For A King."

The Band's Lineup

The lineup for Mandalaband included several musicians who would later gain recognition in the British rock scene. David Durant provided lead vocals. Guitarists Ashley Mulford and John Stimpson, along with keyboardist Vic Emerson and drummer Tony Cresswell, would soon co-found the band Sad Café. Their collective experience in the studio and on stage contributed to the album's rich sound.

Production and Engineering

The album was produced by John Alcock, with mixing handled by David Rohl and Bill Price, who had worked at AIR Studios and Wessex Studios. The engineering was done by Tim Friese-Greene, known for his later work with the band Talk Talk. This combination of talent helped shape the album into a cohesive project that reflects the era's progressive rock tendencies.
