Album Overview

Released on October 5, 1971, "2," also known as "1001° Centigrades," is the second studio album by the French progressive rock band Magma. This album continues the band's exploration of the fictional planet Kobaia, which serves as a backdrop for their complex narratives. The recording took place at Michel Magne's studio in Herouville, France, over a span of six days in April 1971.

Musical Composition

The album consists of three tracks, with the first track, "Riah Sahiltaahk," spanning over 21 minutes and showcasing the band's signature blend of jazz and rock. This lengthy composition is solely credited to drummer Christian Vander. The other two tracks, "'Iss' Lansei Doia" and "Ki Iahl O Liahk," were composed by Teddy Lasry and Francois Cahen, respectively. The latter two tracks are shorter but contribute to the album's overall thematic continuity.

Personnel Changes

Following the departure of guitarist Claude Engel, Magma expanded its horn section. New members Jeff Seffer and Louis Toesca joined, playing saxophone and trumpet. This change added depth and complexity to the band's sound. The lineup also included Klaus Blasquiz on vocals and percussion, Francis Moze on bass, Francois Cahen on piano, and Teddy Lasry on various woodwinds and vocals.

Production Insights

The album was produced by Roland Hilda, with Dominique Blanc-Francard serving as the recording engineer. Christian Vander expressed dissatisfaction with the final studio version of "Riah Sahiltaahk," despite the approval of the rest of the band. In 2014, Vander re-recorded this track, altering its arrangements and incorporating female choral vocals. This reimagined version highlights the evolving nature of Magma's musical vision.

Release Format

"2" was released as a vinyl LP under the Philips label, characteristic of the era's music distribution methods. The album's length and structure reflect the progressive rock genre's penchant for extended compositions and intricate arrangements. Magma's approach to music at this time was marked by a fusion of jazz and rock elements, a hallmark of their style.
