Introduction to Amish

Amish was formed in Galt, Ontario, Canada, in 1970. The band released their self-titled album in 1972 through Sussex Records, catalog SXBS-7016. This album, their only studio release, was pressed in a limited run of just 1,000 copies. The band's manager, Bill Gefross, played a crucial role in connecting them with Sussex Records in the United States.

Recording Process

The album was produced by Mike Theodore and Dennis Coffey, both of whom were affiliated with Motown. They brought the band to GM Studios in East Detroit for the recording sessions. The sound of the album is characterized by organ-driven hard rock infused with progressive elements. A notable aspect of the recording process is that the band’s guitarist, known as Botts, could not enter the United States due to draft-related issues connected to the Vietnam War. As a result, session guitarist Joe Gutz played guitar on the album.

Musical Composition

The album features eight tracks, including a cover of Traffic's "Dear Mr. Fantasy." The opening track, "Sad Girl," sets the tone with its driving rhythm and lyrical themes. Other songs, such as "Black Lace Woman" and "Wise Man," showcase the band's ability to blend rock with progressive influences. Each track varies in length, with the longest being "The Sea," which runs for 6 minutes and 12 seconds, allowing for extended instrumental passages.

Conclusion

Amish's self-titled album was released in 1972 and features a mix of original songs and a notable cover.
