Tutankhamon
"Tutankhamon," the debut album by the Spanish band Iceberg, was released in December 1975 under Bocaccio Records. This album is a concept work that draws inspiration from ancient Egyptian history, featuring a series of tracks that reference themes and figures from that era. The band, formed in the early 1970s, included Max Sunyer on guitar, Josep Mas "Kitflus" on keyboards, Primitivo Sancho on bass, Jordi Colomer on drums, and Angel Riba on vocals and saxophone.
The album was recorded in May 1975 at Estudios Kirios in Madrid. This studio time allowed the band to craft a sound that blends elements of progressive rock with jazz influences. The arrangements are intricate, showcasing the musicians' technical abilities. Each track contributes to the overarching narrative, with titles like "Amenofis IV (El Hereje)" and "Sacerdotes De Amon" directly referencing historical figures and concepts.
The music on "Tutankhamon" features a combination of electric piano, organ, synthesizer, and Mellotron, which adds depth to the sound. The album opens with a brief introduction titled "Tebas," leading into more complex compositions that explore various musical landscapes. Songs like "Lying On The Sand" and "Himno Al Sol" demonstrate the band's ability to blend rock structures with progressive elements, creating an engaging listening experience.
After the release of "Tutankhamon," Angel Riba departed from the group. The remaining members continued to produce music, focusing on instrumental albums until 1978. This shift marked a new direction for the band, steering away from the lyrical concept explored in their debut.
Iceberg's "Tutankhamon" is a significant entry in the catalogue of Spanish progressive rock, reflecting the band's unique approach to storytelling through music. The album was recorded at Estudios Kirios in Madrid.
