Stackridge: A Whimsical Debut from the West Country

Released in 1971, Stackridge's self-titled album marks the debut of the Bristol-based folk-prog group. The album was recorded at De Lane Lea Studios in London from March to April of the same year, with sound engineer Martin Birch at the helm. Birch was already known for his work with significant rock acts, including Deep Purple, who were recording their album "Fireball" in an adjacent studio during the same session.

The album features a six-member lineup, showcasing a diverse range of instruments and styles. James Warren plays bass guitar, acoustic bass, and acoustic guitar, while also contributing to the songwriting. Andrew Creswell-Davis takes on lead guitar, piano, harmonium, and acoustic guitar, further enriching the sound with his songwriting contributions. The band also includes Michael "Mutter" Slater on flute, Michael Evans on violin, and Billy Bent on drums and triangle.

Produced by Fritz Fryer, known for his previous work with The Four Pennies, the album's visual design was handled by the famous art studio Hipgnosis. Their iconic gatefold sleeve features a striking image of seagulls over pink sand, with an inner photograph that captures the band in sepia infrared. This attention to visual detail complements the eclectic sound of the album.

Musically, Stackridge blends elements of folk and progressive rock. The nine tracks include whimsical narratives and complex arrangements, with standout songs like "Percy The Penguin" and "Dora, The Female Explorer." The album's closing track is "Slark," a 14-minute multi-part progressive suite that showcases the band's diverse influences. It reflects the playful yet intricate approach that characterizes much of their work.
